Daniela Saxa-Kaneko
Ceramics

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I was born in Austria and raised in a family where art and crafts were an integral part of our daily lives. With virtually all my immediate and extended family members engaged in one art form or another, ranging from drawing, painting, knitting and sewing to flower arranging, music and poetry, my art education started early and quite naturally. As a result, I tried my hand at a wide variety of artistic media but even as a child, I was most intrigued with the infinite possibilities inherent in three dimensional art, creating trinkets, jewelry and wearables from all sorts of recycled treasures, yarns and fabrics. Eventually, this specific interest lead me to a degree in Fashion Design from Woodbury University and into the Los Angeles fashion industry. While the inequities in this field later motivated me to pursue a legal career in employment rights and disability law, art has always remained my first love. It is my most reliable source of inspiration, joy and solace. I cannot imagine life without a creative outlet in wearable art, jewelry, lampworking or ceramics.

I came to ceramics quite accidentally and immediately fell in love with it. I am largely self-taught and have developed my specific hand building technique over a number of years. Structurally I draw my inspiration from many different sources such as patterns in nature, textiles, iron work or wood carvings. I continue to explore the structural limitations of my technique and am excited to find out where it will lead me in the future. My choice of glaze is more intuitive; I let the shape and texture of each piece direct my choice. All my ceramics are one of a kind, many are fully functional household items; others, like my raku pieces, are purely ornamental. My work is in private collections throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan.
