Lyn-Rae Ashley Inspired by the fire, since 1981 Lyn-Rae Ashley has been adapting pit-firing techniques to her studio environment. The surface of the finished porcelain form is compacted by burnishing with a smooth object, giving the work a subtle, luminescent sheen. The finished vessel is fired in locally-found combustibles twigs, bark, seaweed, etc. - which react with the clay, creating soft colors and unique patterns as the minerals from the combustibles, or in some instances added oxides, fume from the burning materials. The final finish is provided by a light waxing. This low-fired, unglazed work will not hold water - Insert a container for use as a vase. My creative process is stimulated by the play of visually active patterns from the kiln-fired seaweed, driftwood, and sawdust on the smooth, burnished surface of the porcelain. I find working with small areas of texture in contrast with the satin-like polished surface, provides a satisfying direction. The movement of light and shadow against the colors and patterns of sea and earth give constant inspiration. To purchase call: 310-991-7144 or e-mail gabrielle.artistsstudio.pvac@gmail.com
